Endangered Species Future Think: What is Your State’s Hunting Policy?

Florida allows hunting in 161 state parks. These are large and small. How did this happen? Many states have looser policy guidelines and function more independently than others. State rights do not become bargaining chips where top state leadership is strong. Each state has separate and unique animal populations which are either hunted or protected. The governors run their own budgets and make large and small decisions, including local wildlife population management through in-state hunting programs.

What drives some animals into protected status, while others are turned into food items or dog food sold at public venues? Public behavior drives outcomes. Turtle meat is purchased for stew, gumbo and soups. Meat from Turtles, Yak, Buffalo, Bison, Ostrich, Kangaroo, zebra, lion, Llama, bear, bobcat, flamingo, lynx, black bear, Elk, and Alligator is marketed internationally online. Bear meat is sold online in 2015. Black bear meat is found online for about $150 per pound. Flamingo meat cost approximately $5000 plus shipping. Zebra is sold for $300 per steak. Lions raised in America are offered for about $500/lb.

What prevents any endangered animal from joining this select group of dead animals for high end luxury restaurants and villas? How do the environmental powerhouses interact in the sale on these meats and what causes citizens to fight this practice? Eating any endangered or threatened species impacts its long-term survival rates.

Additional legislation is needed in Florida to outlaw private bear farms and bear ranching. It seems reasonable to enact legislation which permanently prevents the creation of meat markets like ground bear or bear dog food if the bear population become significantly larger. This is also true for native turtles. Key legal changes made in tandem with outlawing the hunting of the Florida black bear is a great move in the right direction.

Oklahoma and Montana have large buffalo populations. Thousands of protected buffalo populate the National Bison Range in the Flathead Valley of Montana, the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Oklahoma, the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in northern Nebraska, Sullys Hill National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern North Dakota, and Walnut Creek National Wildlife Refuge in central Iowa. These are amazing and worthy of the same protection given to endangered species. Private buffalo ranching delivers buffalo meat to Whole Foods and Central Market grocery chains.

Florida has black bears, owls, eagles and big cats. Hunting policy for Florida does not differentiate among parks located near construction or highly populated areas. The critical element of safety for animals and humans is missing for some parks. This is not a highly desirable issue and very easy to solve. Mayors in Florida can outlaw and restrict hunting in their territory.

Florida state parks are highly trafficked crown jewels of Florida which must have protection from this poor use of public property. Florida state parks are often beautiful waterfront areas and easy to access. Hillsborough County houses seven state parks including Fort Foster State Park, Alafia River State Park, Egmont Key State Park, Hillsborough River State Park, Little Manatee River State Park, Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, and Ibor City Museum State Park. Pinellas County has Honeymoon Island State Park.

Florida is the nature state and sunshine state. How is it possible to issue hunting permits authorized for use in Florida state parks including a local area Museum park?
Do major wildlife protection organizations have a role in local animal protection? Is Florida less important than the wilderness areas of Africa or Australia? What drives a major wildlife protection organization like The Nature Conservancy,The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Sierra Club, or The World Wildlife Federation into an area?

The NRDC houses lawyers. The WWF and NRDC could form a seamless duo to legislate new laws forcing stronger path for exotic animal protection.

The Speak Up Wekiva group filed a lawsuit in Leon County challenging the constitutionality of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-approved bear hunt. Conservation groups including The Sierra Club attempted to prevent the 2015 Black Bear Hunt in Florida without the expertise needed to stop the event. This lawsuit requested reversal of the return of bear hunting in Florida and to halt the pending sale of bear-hunting permits. This did not stop the hunt or prevent a future hunt for 2016.

Can these organizations envision the problems associated with hunting endangered and threatened animals in highly populated counties? The 2016 Florida Black Bear hunt has been postponed. Public action changes outcomes. Get involved.
