Managing Zika Virus across the Southern USA

Image Credit: Radiological Society of North America Image Credit: Radiological Society of North America

As the Zika virus appears in newly born USA infants, there is an increased need to step up delivery statistics from South and Latin America. These nations do not have adequate record keeping and many children are born without hospital papers. Infant mortality and birth defects are significantly under-reported. The photo shown above is not meant to scare people. The consequences must be clearly understood.

It is key to increase awareness of this growing problem. Local community public service ads could raise the overall information level of methods to reduce the spread of Zika.

Mosquitoes breed best in stagnant water. They commonly lay eggs in ponds, marshes, swamps, fish ponds, backyard fountains, lakes, and other wetland habitats. The Anopheles mosquito is quite hardy and can lay eggs in polluted water and brackish water swamps. This is problematic for areas like Louisiana and Florida.

The initial step is shutting down the local breeding areas for mosquitoes. Mosquito eggs laid without water can hatch weeks or months later when water arrives. A push across towns and counties to keep the grass mowed low and destroy mosquito local habitat is needed and public service television ads to raise the general information level. Swimming pool pumps must be run on a regular basis.

Swimming pools under construction are looming problems for mosquito breeding. These are often left empty and fill with several inches of rain water prior to completion. The perfect host site to hatch mosquito eggs. Reptile and birds can enter and become infected with Zika.

Old boats should be placed upside down. Boat dealers must become involved in protecting boats from water collection during hurricane season. Boat rental shops should guard against water collection in unused boats. Boat repair shops are also a concern. Boats left in 24 hour guarded storage units outdoors should be covered or moved inside.

Empty pots and containers around the yard must be moved to prevent water stagnation. Remove old tires and recycle, rather than help expand the mosquito population. Pet water dishes should be washed and emptied often.

Install solar motors in birdbaths to prevent motionless water and replace water one or twice a week. Mow culverts and open drainage areas to ensure that water flows and drains. Older trees with holes due to rotted limbs or trauma should be filled in to prevent this as breeding spot.

Build french drains on property when drainage is a problem. Haul in fill-dirt for low areas to prevent water collection. These solutions are not all inexpensive.

The Zika virus creates long-term health problems without current medical answers. Symptoms similar to arthritis will appear and require pharmaceutical intervention. Mortality increases for infants are anticipated as the virus spreads.

Endangered Species Future Think: Florida Black Bears True Head Count

The latest underlying truth for Florida about its deadly assault on the black bears is clear. Florida black bears may be endangered without protection at this very moment. The 2016 Hunt was called off by Governor Rick Scott. The policy and law are not revised or amended at this time.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission authorized the killing of about 20 percent of the bear population in the October 2015 hunt. With a Florida black bear count of 3,800, the commission sold over 2,200 permits to kill 302 bears during the October hunt. What factors control the permit to bear kill rates during a hunt spread across the state?

Thirty-five (35) mother bears were shot during the hunt in late October of 2015. Florida black bears usually produce offspring at ages 3 to 5 and each bear litter usually has at least two or three bear offspring. Bear cubs drink their mother’s milk for more than 30 weeks after birth. This resulted in about 70 to 105 orphaned baby bear cubs. These young bears without parents die. The real numbers may be higher. This factor increased the likely dead bear count by 25% to 33%.

The average black bear lifespan in the wild is 18 years. Many bears in zoos live significantly longer. The size of a male adult Florida black bear weighs about 126–551 lb and females weigh about 90–375 lb. The low priced bear hunting permit of $100 creates an artificially insignificant value for bear meat and ancillary bear products, such as bear paws and floor rugs.

The real Florida black bear count could reflect an actually endangered status prior to the 2015 hunt. This appears to be the case. A large piece of land must be purchased for a black bear preserve connecting the current areas of existing habitat. This land purchase lowers bear and human interaction and creates a space for bear families to raise cubs.

Past Florida black bear hunting proceeds (at least $350,000) are needed to create this protected space. Central Florida is a treat with its large open spaces. Many large tracts of land qualify as potential animal reserve areas. This space must be large enough for several species to share. There are several additional endangered or threatened species which need a safe habitat. Big cats and spotted owls can share this preserve with eagles and other important Florida animal legacies.

Leadership is needed for the protection of Florida black bears and other endangered species. This is a looming issue. New voices with an active role in animal and environmental protection must fill this void. Leo DiCaprio has a strong record as an animal activist and global climate speaker. The environmental challenge requires standing up to those with the money and power ignore endangered species status when hunting. This is not an exact science and the goal is not to stop all hunting.

Imagine a future where Washington does not have the resources or regulatory authority to supervise endangered species in individual states. This could result from financial collapse related to the reduction or suspension of social security payments. Our national budget is not balanced and this is a low priority line item expense for those uninterested in animal protection and environmental outcomes.
The state of Florida can benefit from state regulators with foresight and courage to imagine a different future. It must take the needed steps for the habitat management of an endangered species sanctuary. These bears are one of Florida’s natural resources. This should not be a petting zoo, but rather a dignified space for threatened and endangered animal species.

Endangered Species Future Think: Reversing Trends for Endangered Animals

The National Wildlife Federation outlines several steps which are needed to protect endangered species including:

• Defending and strengthening the Endangered Species Act
• Holding federal agencies and state authorities accountable
• Advocate for increased funding and private landowner incentives for land conservation trusts, land acquisition, and land swaps
• Protecting and restoring the natural habitat
• Reducing threats to wildlife like hunting, construction, and invasive species which threaten their   survival

Many people look and miss the trees for the forest. Land conservation and animal protectionism are difficult. Wealthy people may not endorse this belief and enjoy the sporting element of slaughtering protected animals.

Creating a better world is a long term commitment. Animals cannot speak for themselves. Grown-ups must assess danger and take bold steps to create a path for survival for our endangered species.
How is it possible to walk this harsh path forward when the universe has many hidden snares and snipers? Sir Walter Scott left us with over 26 books and many amazing quotes: “All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.”

Each person can impact the world in ways that cannot be imagined. Widen the education of each person to enhance contributions. The world has many options to improve the fate of endangered species.

The North American Bear Center works to conserve habitat, stop poaching, rehabilitate injured and orphaned bears, and reduce human and bear conflict. Organizations like the North American Bear Center team with the Endangered Species Act, federal agencies, and state wildlife officers to create a platform for black bear protection.

State Wildlife Plans must uphold and endorse the creation of sufficient habitat and protect it from global warming and lower carbon footprints to sustain long-term survival. The humankind focus must protect this group to ensure its own survival. This does not mean one world order. Everyone does their part and carries their share of the load as the world moves ahead with new challenges. How much commitment is required to attain another outcome? Duty requires investigation of the opponent’s goals?

The legacy for America and Canada must be to protect the assets of North America including endangered species. The World Wildlife Federation, land conservation organizations, and foundations involved with globally endangered species protection must select key leadership roles with this goal in mind.
Silvia Earle and Leo DiCaprio are well known international environmentalists with many roles in global climate control and protecting marine and wildlife endangered species. They are both excellent role models for endangered species education, commitment, involvement, and leadership.

Saving the Florida Dolphins

Will Florida fight to protect the threatened dolphin pods swimming in its beautiful coastline waters? The ocean is an asset shared by everyone. The bay’s massive pollution increases the probability of locally threatened species turning into extinct species. The contamination of rivers and water tables has raised the pH of water along Florida’s coastline and bays. Bacteria counts are also increased with water degradation.

Watch the plight of dying marine species ingesting plastics and toxins is tragic. This is well documented in Blue Ocean Film Festival’s array of Indie films. Marine life cannot digest plastic and die with full stomachs of toxic plastic. The best example is an autopsy of a dead penguin: its stomach was full of plastic and could no longer digest anything it ate. Another example is contaminated shark meat: testing showed toxic levels of mercury.

As budgets are tightened with increasing demands, the amazing Florida waters suffer pollution from plastic tabs, metal pull-off tabs, plastic grocery bags, Styrofoam, diesel gasoline spills, oil spills, and nitrogen runoff from fertilizers. There are amazing Indie films sharing this marine life plight every year at the Blue Ocean Film Festival in Saint Petersburg and Monaco.

World Climate Change: Renewable Energy to Slow Land Loss From Rising Sea Levels

There are many scary world climate change issues ahead. The global climate changes include temperatures increases, volatile precipitation patterns, rising sea levels, weather disasters, forest fires, and droughts. The loss of Arctic ice and related ocean temperature changes is new. The most important issue may be limiting the pollutants entering the ocean. Is this due to nitrates and phosphates entering our rivers and stream to enter the oceans? Has this increased CO2 in the world?
Has fracking in the oil and gas industry caused a minor collapse of substructures and water aquifers?

Is part of the rising sea due to actual subsidence of land in many parts of the world? What happens as formations subside? Does this cause river and stream flow differently into the ocean or sea and reduce wetlands?

Is acid rain from smog or factory pollutants the missing puzzle piece explaining the rising sea level? The chemical composition of the ocean may be the key item to monitor, but which exact chemicals must be tested? New chemicals are created every year and no one understands how they impact the globe. Who will steer the monitoring of the ocean and sea level? Which international group can lead the world in this important lifesaving topic?

Have underwater volcanoes increased the temperature of the ocean enough to permanently change the melting and refreezing points of the earth? Earlier research found that volcanoes on land also surged in activity about 12,000 to 7,000 years ago resulting in a loss of glacier and ice sheets coverage. Underwater volcanoes create increases of carbon dioxide into the ocean. This probably impacts local water temperatures. Harvard University research on undersea land shifts and the long trend line of underwater volcanoes raises unanswered questions in this area.

Can unexpected ocean contaminate raise the temperature of the ocean? The ice and Arctic polar areas are melting at an accelerating rate. This is clearly shown in Greenland. The loss of ice results in changes in water temperature. Has this factor caused a temperature rise in the water? How fast does this create rising sea levels? Has this ended the lives of Polar Bears, Walrus, Penguins, and seals? Is there an attempt to relocate any of these endangered animals by WFF, NOAA, or Green Peace?
Have new air pollutants caused higher air temperatures? Did this impact rainfall levels in certain areas? How is our big picture altered through the side effects?

How is the general public informed about this looming issue? Is it possible to slow this trend of losing land mass to rising sea levels? Rising sea levels affect everyone. Impacts include animals, fish, marshes, and sand dunes. Animal and wildlife species living in coastal areas are impacted and their habitat is decreased or eliminated.

Tracking coastline land loss is important to access how rising sea levels impact local areas. The Maldives Islands are a key example of rising sea levels and land loss. It is currently very difficult to understand the acceleration of rising sea levels. In coastal areas, problems associated with subsidence may be due to rising sea levels.

Is it possible to create a real-time software model which indicates how global warming and other environmental changes are impacting coastal and island land loss? The model could include a highly detailed drawing of all the countries and bodies of water. Any changes in sea level or temperature could be reflected by the blue ocean covering lost land and be viewed online. This could be displayed by news and nonprofit foundation’s websites to help people understand the real impact on their world and location.

One solution lies in the responsible use of global fossil fuel resources and the integration of renewable energy at a fast pace. This is complicated by recent low prices of oil and gas. The new lower commodity prices make renewable energy a social platform rather than an affordable economic choice.
The Leo DiCaprio Foundation and NRDC are great places to learn about the incorporation of green energy and solar energy across America and the world. Mr. DiCaprio spoke at the 2016 Davos World Economic Forum summit meetings on global climate change and energy. Renewable energy is a platform endorsed by Green Peace, NRDC, WWF, Leo DiCaprio Foundation, and many notable nonprofits and foundations. It is our best hope for reducing fossil fuel use and lowering the carbon footprints of citizens around the globe.

Wind energy assets can last over one hundred years. It is found in Europe. GE and Siemens Energy offer superb capital equipment for solar and wind projects internationally. These renewable energy assets may have a better payout due to their longer time horizon. Current falling commodity prices could require wind generated electric power rather than solar in appropriate geographic areas. Tax incentives are often available for both solar and wind energy. This may not be a great advantage of your financial situation cannot utilize this extra benefit.

Today’s Environmental Activists

Changing long-term trends in pollution, global climate change, and water protection requires money, foresight, and leadership. The implementing of new law focuses attention on protecting our world. It does not enforce these laws.

Environmental protection requires more than important dedicated activism. Third world countries have not been previously held accountable for air pollution and global warming. Laws differ among countries. Poor less educated countries move forward with new technology advances and successfully expand their economies. This is great progress.

Efforts must be made to enforce penalties on the books for environmental catastrophes to reverse the existing pattern of passing legislation without holding leaders responsible for fines and clean-ups. Money is moved into growing economies. Human rights matter. Legal enforcement should address the environmental claims in countries as they are transformed into powerful economies.

Longer Term Consequences of Zika

UT Texas Photo
The Zika outbreak is spreading quickly. This impacts many industries working in the area. Land conservation and habitat restoration require human workers. They are at risk for Zika virus. Cost will increase restoring and protecting endangered and threatened land. It is imperative to step up the restoration money for the areas now prior to the formal declaration of a “Pandemic Warning” by the CDC in Atlanta.

WWF and NRDC must recognize the huge impact of Zika on their goal. It increases health dangers for workers and endangered species. There are no solutions available at the present moment. It is imperative to focus attention on this matter and develop options. Creative and aggressive ideas are key to slowing this situation until a cure is found. CRISPR gene therapy may solve this disease in the future. In the meantime, long-term health consequences may be staved off with immunotherapy.

Aerators Slow Spreading of Zika Virus in Man Made Lakes and Ponds

Numerous apartment and offices complexes are built around man made lakes, ponds, and water features.  Zika  virus' entry into America requires  planning to slow this disease. Fresh water ponds, streams, trapped bodies of water near rivers, water features, Koi ponds, and man made lakes are breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito.

Pesticide solutions generate toxins which are environmental and health concerns. They eventually contaminate ground water and land endangering humans and endangered species. The Aedes mosquito problem is spreading in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Multiple cases are documented by medical authorities and the CDC.

Solar powered water aeration features are the most effective solution to this problem. This eliminates the need for electricity in the area. Moving  water prevents the breeding of the carrier of Zika...the Aedes mosquito. Green living improves the mosquito problem, without leaving pollutants and contaminants. The water systems connect with one another. This will prevent toxic run-off and destruction of larger bodies of water.

Man made lakes and water features are located in many office developments, apartment developments, planned cities, city parks, catfish farms, farms, and ranches. Water needs movement to prevent stagnation and pesticide spraying. The increased oxygen transfer rate moves the water diminishing the concern. Several aerators are required to significantly move water in larger man made lakes and ponds. Kasco's Product above relies on electricity, rather than solar energy.

Solar solutions prevent destruction of the water aquifers. There are several manufacturers, but the city government's are spraying pesticides. Longer term solutions must be evaluated immediately.
"Solar powered aeration systems are an  attractive alternative to electricity for environmentally conscious reasons. It can also replace costly fuel run compressors easing maintenance and operations. Canadianpond.ca offers solar aeration using the Solar line of products for a reliable alternative to standard aeration:
  • CB line is for industrial applications
  • SB line for residential or smaller applications.
Cabinet with battery and solar panel

Canadianpond.ca is the exclusive Canadian dealer for Keeton Industries, the US manufacturer of Solaer aeration.
  • For aquatic environments ranging in size requiring 1 diffuser up to 16 diffusers
  • Fully automatic systems are designed to run up to 20 hours per day under standard operating condition.
  • The battery backup system continues operations under less-than-optimal conditions
  • Built for both temperate or colder climates
  • Economical, no additional costs to run
  • The Solar systems pay for themselves with time, resulting in an unbelievable cost savings over electric-powered aeration systems."

Saving Endangered Species and Our Water Acquifers

What criteria does EPA consider making regulatory determinations for water?

The EPA recently lowered water quality by expanding the list of low amounts of chemical additives found in a wide range of manufacturing and industrial firms.

This trend surpasses the scope of mining, manufacturing, and energy related issues. It extends to overseas car manufacturing and product production, as factories are relocated abroad with relaxed or non-existent means to protect habitat and water.  This goes beyond America's new EPA laws, but they are a great place to examine the seriousness of this issue. The photo above is from Australia. Bad water is clearly an international problem.

"When making a “determination” to regulate a contaminant in drinking water, the law requires that EPA determine whether it meets the following three criteria:

  • The contaminant may have an adverse effect on the health of persons;
  • The contaminant is known to occur or there is substantial likelihood the contaminant will occur in public water systems with a frequency and at levels of public health concern;
  • In the sole judgment of the Administrator, regulation of the contaminant presents a meaningful opportunity for health risk reductions for persons served by public water systems."
The above EPA criteria is taken from the EPA.gov website to illustrate one of the key issues for habitat and endangered species. It lacks long-term consideration for wildlife, endangered species, and eco-system protection. This is mandatory for our world to survive and thrive. The success of animal populations support overall life for everyone. Farmers and ranchers are very familiar with this concept.

EPA recently included the National Academy of Sciences – National Research Council and the National Drinking Water Advisory Council in their process to examine and evaluate their water protection process. This process takes too long to not subject animals and humans to harsh and dangerous chemicals which can cause death and cancer. People and animals with underlying diseases do not have the immune system protection needed to defend themselves from the chemical industry.

A new dimension to animal protection has entered world politics. The need to demand that world leaders create significant penalties to the destruction of habitat and water supplies for endangered species. The EPA recently relaxed quality standards to allow small levels of five chemicals in the water.

The World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Sierra Club, and National Resouce Defense Council (NRDC) must force this high profile problem into the limelight until proper protection for habitat and endangered species is manifest. Water aquifers are under attack. Solar energy is key to fewer toxic chemicals on the planet and slowing global warming. They are not the solution everywhere, but are a great start.

There must be an immediate call for home water purification systems around the globe until this situation is reversed.  Brita and PUR systems are found at Targets, Publix, Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart, online, and higher quality systems are available in health stores. They can be used to filter water for pets and animals. Larger versions are available for farms and ranches. Every person makes a difference. It is seldom clear early in tipping points what the exact nature of this difference creates.

Can Zika Kill Endangered Animals?

How does the government protect citizens from Zika virus without destroying land and ground water table? This issue competes with the stated goal of land conservation and habitat protection for humans and wildlife. Will attempts to prevent Zika virus damage protected habitats and accelerate endangered species problems?

The Zika virus has accelerated its attack in key states including Texas and Florida. As city and state governments research this impending crisis, children die and people continue to be diagnosed with this incurable disease. Most Zika cases are not diagnosed and will never reach the CDC in Atlanta.

If the plan of attack is based upon spraying the effected locations with DEET based mosquito sprays, the problem will expand into other areas. DEET is a chemical with neurological side effects and frequently damages motor control. The toxin is absorbed through the skin and stored in fat cells in the body. DEET's listed side effects include skin irritation, disorientation, dizziness, seizures, and death. DEET cannot be utilized over five to nine days without health problems. It causes birth defects.

Duke University pesticide study revealed "With heavy exposure to DEET . . . humans may experience memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath." Dr. Abou-Donia with Duke University stated that combined exposure to DEET and permethrin, a mosquito spray ingredient, contributes to motor deficits,  learning problems, and memory dysfunction. DEET is a pesticide with over 50 years of history. Research is easily found and available in other countries. This environmental toxin negatively impacts the mosquito population, along with humans and animals in the area. DEET is extremely toxic for people with HIV, cancer, diabetes, LUPUS, M.S., kidney disease, severe allergies, heavy metals poisoning, autoimmune diseases, liver cirrhosis, and organ failure of any type.

As awareness grows to empty containers of water and remove water catching items from the yards and public areas, many locations are unable to eliminate this threat. Lakes and stagnant areas of water scattered around river beds are almost impossible to protect. Swamps along the Gulf Coast will prove to be breeding grounds for the Zika virus.

The green living non-toxic solution includes planting lemon balm, lemongrass, citronella, garlic, catnip, basil, clove, tea tree, rosemary, marigolds, and lemon geraniums to reduce mosquito populations. These examples of aromatic herbs should be researched as safe mosquito and Zika protection.

COLUMBUS, OH - During the first two weeks in April, approximately 257 acres across three of Ohio’s state forests were planted with more than 182,000 native hardwood tree seedlings as a result of American Municipal Power Inc.’s (AMP) ongoing reforestation efforts on reclaimed strip mine land on behalf of its member communities. The projects are located at Fernwood, Harrison and West Blue Rock state forests near Steubenville, Cadiz and Zanesville across eastern Ohio. The project is the result of a joint effort by AMP and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

“This project furthers AMP’s goal, as guided by our Sustainability Principles, of reducing our overall emissions profile,” said AMP President and CEO Marc Gerken. “In addition to strategic investments our members have made in renewable energy projects, this and the other reforestation efforts are further offsetting greenhouse gas emissions that are an inevitable part of a balanced generation portfolio. The partnerships we have created not only benefit our members, but are improving public space for generations to come.”

“We are pleased to partner with AMP in this tree-planting project,” said Robert Boyles, Ohio’s state forester. “Not only will these plantings provide excellent reclamation for formerly strip-mined land, but ongoing care for the seedlings and subsequent sustainable management of the resulting woodlands will provide numerous benefits for generations to come.”
The project was initiated in 2015 as part of AMP’s continued reforestation efforts across reclaimed mine land in the Midwest. These projects represent the second phase of reforestation, which first began in 2010 with the planting of 200 acres in Columbiana County.

Trees serve as excellent carbon offsets, and properly documented and certified reforestation is accepted by international carbon reduction protocols. The species planted at the AMP project sites include native hardwoods such as oak (bur, chinkapin, white, northern red and shumard), sycamore, sweetgum, maple, black cherry and yellow poplar.
AMP continues to work with project partners to identify future project sites for additional carbon offset reforestation projects.

In exchange for the value of future carbon offsets that will eventually be generated by the newly planted tree seedlings, AMP provides the project management and funding to execute site preparation and professional planting through contracted partner Williams Forestry. ODNR retains the ownership of the land and will be responsible for the sustainable management of the new forest, in consultation with AMP. Site preparation work and species selection was coordinated with ODNR and reflects substantial research into reforesting abandoned mine lands in the Appalachian region.

Anonymous Hunting Permits

“No longer can we discount the lives of sensitive and intelligent creatures merely because they assume nonhuman form. The things that make life most precious and blest — courage and daring, conscience and compassion, imagination and originality, fantasy and play — do not belong to our kind alone.” This work is credited to The Souls of Animals by Gary Kowalski.

Is there a legal basis for anonymity in hunting permits issued across America on a federal level? It does not appear to be Constitutional in nature. The extreme aggressiveness of this behavior is reminiscent of anonymous computer hackers. They are often bored bright men behaving like petulant children. Investigative journalism did not find unnamed hunting permits in areas of the USA, outside Florida. Is this a state awarded gift by the office of the governor or Game and Wildlife Commissions? How does this concept arrive in our lives?

Trophy hunting drives large payments to hunt big game. These are usually the most elegant and noble animals, including tigers, lions, polar bears, giraffe, and many others. A fine for killing endangered species will not prohibit this act. People pay $350,000 to hunt endangered species. The fines for killing and smuggling endangered animals are easily within reach of the wealthy.

Exotic game ranching in Texas exposes examples of this illegal behavior, such as lions along Texas Highway 71 and exotic big cats escaping San Antonio area exotic game ranches.

It is time to prohibit anonymous hunting across America. If you want to hunt, you must identify yourself publicly on the permit. No third party names or substituted designee hunters allowed for this very important area of wildlife management and animal protection.

Protecting America’s future is key to self determination and defining our role in the world. Animals must be protected at home and abroad. It is time for activists to step forward and protect our amazing wildlife.

Leo DiCaprio’s foundation recently raised $40 million dollars to preserve and save the environment with help from Elton John and Prince Albert of Monoco. Two private music concerts with Elton John were sold for $3m and two arctic expeditions with Prince Albert II of Monaco sold for $1.6m. He also won the SAG Inspiration Award for 2015.

Endangered Species Future Think: What is Your State’s Hunting Policy?

Florida allows hunting in 161 state parks. These are large and small. How did this happen? Many states have looser policy guidelines and function more independently than others. State rights do not become bargaining chips where top state leadership is strong. Each state has separate and unique animal populations which are either hunted or protected. The governors run their own budgets and make large and small decisions, including local wildlife population management through in-state hunting programs.

What drives some animals into protected status, while others are turned into food items or dog food sold at public venues? Public behavior drives outcomes. Turtle meat is purchased for stew, gumbo and soups. Meat from Turtles, Yak, Buffalo, Bison, Ostrich, Kangaroo, zebra, lion, Llama, bear, bobcat, flamingo, lynx, black bear, Elk, and Alligator is marketed internationally online. Bear meat is sold online in 2015. Black bear meat is found online for about $150 per pound. Flamingo meat cost approximately $5000 plus shipping. Zebra is sold for $300 per steak. Lions raised in America are offered for about $500/lb.

What prevents any endangered animal from joining this select group of dead animals for high end luxury restaurants and villas? How do the environmental powerhouses interact in the sale on these meats and what causes citizens to fight this practice? Eating any endangered or threatened species impacts its long-term survival rates.

Additional legislation is needed in Florida to outlaw private bear farms and bear ranching. It seems reasonable to enact legislation which permanently prevents the creation of meat markets like ground bear or bear dog food if the bear population become significantly larger. This is also true for native turtles. Key legal changes made in tandem with outlawing the hunting of the Florida black bear is a great move in the right direction.

Oklahoma and Montana have large buffalo populations. Thousands of protected buffalo populate the National Bison Range in the Flathead Valley of Montana, the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Oklahoma, the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in northern Nebraska, Sullys Hill National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern North Dakota, and Walnut Creek National Wildlife Refuge in central Iowa. These are amazing and worthy of the same protection given to endangered species. Private buffalo ranching delivers buffalo meat to Whole Foods and Central Market grocery chains.

Florida has black bears, owls, eagles and big cats. Hunting policy for Florida does not differentiate among parks located near construction or highly populated areas. The critical element of safety for animals and humans is missing for some parks. This is not a highly desirable issue and very easy to solve. Mayors in Florida can outlaw and restrict hunting in their territory.

Florida state parks are highly trafficked crown jewels of Florida which must have protection from this poor use of public property. Florida state parks are often beautiful waterfront areas and easy to access. Hillsborough County houses seven state parks including Fort Foster State Park, Alafia River State Park, Egmont Key State Park, Hillsborough River State Park, Little Manatee River State Park, Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, and Ibor City Museum State Park. Pinellas County has Honeymoon Island State Park.

Florida is the nature state and sunshine state. How is it possible to issue hunting permits authorized for use in Florida state parks including a local area Museum park?
Do major wildlife protection organizations have a role in local animal protection? Is Florida less important than the wilderness areas of Africa or Australia? What drives a major wildlife protection organization like The Nature Conservancy,The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Sierra Club, or The World Wildlife Federation into an area?

The NRDC houses lawyers. The WWF and NRDC could form a seamless duo to legislate new laws forcing stronger path for exotic animal protection.

The Speak Up Wekiva group filed a lawsuit in Leon County challenging the constitutionality of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-approved bear hunt. Conservation groups including The Sierra Club attempted to prevent the 2015 Black Bear Hunt in Florida without the expertise needed to stop the event. This lawsuit requested reversal of the return of bear hunting in Florida and to halt the pending sale of bear-hunting permits. This did not stop the hunt or prevent a future hunt for 2016.

Can these organizations envision the problems associated with hunting endangered and threatened animals in highly populated counties? The 2016 Florida Black Bear hunt has been postponed. Public action changes outcomes. Get involved.
